Scimitar Horned Oryx are truly amazingly adaptive animals. Put them in a hot climate without water and they can raise their body temperature to 116 degrees. By doing this they conserve water by not sweating it out. That is evolution at its most innovative. They can do without water for 9 to 10 months by getting whatever water they can from the vegetation they eat. That’s an amazing animal. No wonder their lifespan was up to 20 years in the wild.

Once thriving in huge herds in all of North Africa, they are extinct in there native habitat. No amount of adaptability can save an animal from poaching, human encroachment, climate changes or excess grazing and hunting. The good news is that Scimitar Horned Oryx herds in Texas number in the thousands thanks to the good works of Texas game reserves and breeding programs. Do to these programs, the Scimitar Horned Oryx is not facing extinction.

Scimitar Horned Oryx are mostly white with reddish brown necks. They have a reddish/orange and white face mask and a long tufted tail. They are a good sized animal. Body length ranges from 4.9 feet to 7.5 feet. They grow to be about 4.6 feet at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 220 to 480 pounds.

Scimitar Oryx Hunting in Texas is great fun. These exotics are gregarious and love to hang out with each other. However, they are not that fond of humans hanging around with them. Although they are not as skittish as some and will look at hunters before running off, you’ll need to be within 100 to 200 yards to make your shot.
