Native to East Asia, these deer would not make good next-door neighbors. They have 10 distinctive sounds. Pick up a newborn Sika and it will squall like baby; make yourself known during a hunt and be treated to a doe’s high-pitched eerie alarm whistle. Hinds must play hard to get as the rutting buck will serenade her with a medley of sounds for hours on end. (Good grief!) There is a lot of color variation in this species. They range from grayish-brown to mahogany to black with an off- white color on their chin, belly and throat. Sika deer are considered to be a small to medium-sized deer. The average size for a stag is 25” to 44” from the shoulder. Males weigh 150 to 240 pounds and females weight 100-110 pounds. Body length is 42” to 62”. What they lack in size they make up in wariness and aggression. At rutting time, usually September through October, the males sporting a handsome mane, show just what tough creatures they are. They engage in long fights using hooves and antlers, sometimes to the death. Sika deer are a hardy breed. Their lifespan is from 15 to 18 years. The record age of a Sika in captivity is 25 years, 5 months. Females develop two black bumps on their foreheads instead of antlers. Bucks’ antlers look similar to those of an elk with two narrow prongs with 3 to 4 tines on each side. Their backward curved antlers grow 11”-19” with trophy size at 28”-30”.
