Mouflon Sheep Hunting
Mouflon sheep hunting is a perfect example of what hunting is all about. It’s a beautiful colorful animal, smart, and fast on its feet providing the perfect hunting challenge. With V-Bharre Ranch’s Mouflon sheep hunting packages, you’ll pitch your wits against these unique sheep.
Some research shows that Mouflon sheep are believed to be one of the two original ancestors of the regular sheep we know and love to eat (but we’re still not sure). Other research indicates they may have started out as domestic sheep but then became wild. Whatever the truth, we’re just happy they still exist. They hail from Corsica, Sardina and Cyprus where they are now endangered but can now be found in several European countries…and of course in Texas. Covered with a stiff, bristly overcoat, Mouflon sheep shed their wooly undercoat in spring. Rams can weigh as much as 120 pounds. Their herd status is based on the age and length of their horn (‘nuff said).
There’s a lot of talk about subspecies and Texas has its share. But if you want to identify a purebred Mouflon sheep, look for a rusty coat, gray to white under parts, small ears, small tail (about 4 inches long), a reddish brown to dark brown mane, and a light colored saddle patch. The purebred Mouflon has curved horns that point forward with tips that turn outward, not flared out like most rams. The nose is black and fawn-colored with light gray to white coloring.
Because they are intelligent, wary, strong and agile, hunting Mouflon sheep will give you a good challenge. They climb quickly over rocks and through thick brush and they’re hard to spot right away. You have to really look hard to see them. The rams are really tough so you want to get a good clear and clean shot.
When you’re on a Mouflon sheep hunt, look for sheep with creamy-white to dark heart-shaped horns at least 25 inches in length. Trophy size ranges from 28 to 36 inches. We even have super golds measuring over 33″. Bring your patience when you go Mouflon sheep hunting because you’re really going to have to stalk these animals. While you’re reading this, go ahead and give us a call to sign up for one of our Mouflon sheep hunting packages. This hunt’s gonna be a real challenge.
