Aoudad Sheep hunting is considered to be one of the more rigorous of hunting sports, not to mention the rigors of trying to pronounce it. Actually, the most agreed upon pronunciation is “ow-dad.” The African Berber tribe named it and it means “wild sheep.” Because we want to share this special hunting challenge, we offer some of the best Aoudad Sheep hunting packages around.
Aoudad Sheep or Aoudad Goat?
The Aoudad Sheep may not really be fully sheep. Recent genetic tests indicate that they are an awful lot like goats. That actually makes a lot of sense. Native to the mountains and the Barbary Coast of North Africa, these sheep climb like goats. They can do an 8 foot standing broad jump over a high fence. Their preferred means of escape from danger is jumping up a vertical side of a mountain without breaking a sweat. Even newborns can climb rocky terrain shortly after birth.
Aoudad sheep are tawny gold to red color, with shaggy throat hair. On rams, this hair growth extends all the way down their chest and feet. They are big exotic animals, weighing 90 pounds to 310 pounds and standing 2.5 to 3.5 feet at the shoulder. Lifespan in the wild is 22 years. Both males and females sport ringed horns averaging 20 inches. Trophy size is considered 29 inches, although there have been rare records of 30 to 34 inches. Horns curve out, backward and in.
Texas Aoudad Sheep Hunting
Aoudad Sheep are normally active in the early morning and late afternoon, resting during the heat of the day. These are smart, wary animals with a great sense of smell and great hearing and vision. They can spot a hunter over a mile away. They have center pads in their rock-hard split hooves which enable them to grip ledges and “scamper” vertically up the side of a sheer cliff. When hunting Aoudad Sheep you have to get really good cover without them seeing or hearing you. They travel fast and far once they know you’re there. We guarantee that your Aoudad Sheep hunting experience will be one of the most memorable exotic hunting adventures you’ve ever had. So take a minute and book one of our Aoudad Sheep packages now.
